Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs

How does IPL Laser remove hair?
Highly controlled flashes of laser beams are selectively absorbed by the pigment in hair follicles lying below the surface of your skin. The absorbed light heats the hair follicle, which damages and destroys the regrowth potential of the follicle (as opposed to waxing which only slows regrowth potential)-all without damaging surrounding tissue. Because hair follicle pigment is the lasers target tissue, white hair is not substantially effected. Hair of any color is effectively
killed. Hair follicles are usually in different growth cycles at different times in relation to one another. Since the follicle must be in its active growth phase in order to be destroyed by the laser, several (3 - 6 or more) treatments provided 4 - 6 weeks apart are required to assure the wanted hair loss is permanent. Permanent hair reduction does absolutely occur, unlike painful waxing & excruciating electrolysis! Also, the majority of patients experience a very large reduction in acne after hair follicle count is reduced. With hair follicle reduction, there is less skin surface and hiding places for skin bacteria to hide. The result is softer, smoother skin with better complexion.

What happens during a treatment?

All hair above the skin should be shaved or sheared prior to the treatment session so that it is a half - 1 mm long and not overlapping the skin. You will be asked to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light.  The laser hand piece is then aimed at a group of follicles and pulses of laser begin killing many unwanted hair follicles. When the treatment is complete, much of your hair will be literally disintegrated up in smoke and/or wiped off and gone. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out over the next week. You will have no doubt as to the effectiveness and ease of treatment. It is quite remarkable and FDA approved!

What does the treatment feel like?
Each pulse of laser feels like a slight sting or pinch, similar to the snap of a "warm rubber band." Topical anesthetic or conscious sedation with a pill may be provided by your PCP, but most (95%) of our clients don’t require it.

Can all hair be treated?
Our state-of-the-art 755 & 1064nm laser offers you customized treatment according to your hair color, texture and body location. Any hair with at least some pigment in it (black, brown, red and even blond) is treated effectively.

Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. You may experience some reddening and/or mild local swelling at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. On rare occasions, some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. The skin may also become lighter or darker following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a short time. Limiting sun exposure before and after treatments and using spf 30 or more after treatments will minimize risk of complications.

Skin Contact Cooling / Chilling!
It is very important to protect the top layers of the skin from becoming too hot during a laser treatment. Many lasers have different cooling mechanisms to protect skin. Blue Ridge Laser employs Zimmer Cryo 6 Chiller air blower for topical chilling & numbing at no extra charge. We can chill the treatment area to 5 - 12 Celsius safely & effectively. The Zimmer Cryo 6 can be used continuously or as needed and allows us to use higher energies at a safe level, and thus obtain better, quicker, permanent hair loss.

What about your hair for Laser hair removal?
Excessive hair growth, or unusual hair growth patterns, is a common problem for many people. Factors such as genetics, endocrine systems, medications and ethnicity influence distribution and growth of hair. Abnormal hair growth is difficult to define. What may be an unbearable burden to one may be unnoticed by someone else. Underlying hormonal problems can cause excessive hair growth.

Hair growth cycles between active and resting stages. The growing cycle of body hair lasts only for a few months while as much as 30% of your hair is in the resting stage. This is why you will need a series of treatments. Laser hair removal is the newest, state-of-the-art procedure to offer you a customized treatment according to your hair color, texture, and body location. Any hair with at least some pigment in it (black, brown, red, and even some darker blond) can be treated effectively. Blond, gray and fine hair will require more treatments.

What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is the non-invasive removal of unwanted facial and body hair with the assistance of a laser of intense pulsed light that targets the pigment in the hair follicle. The dark color of the hair (melanin) absorbs the laser light energy and deactivates the hair follicle’s ability to grow.

What should I do after treatment?
After the treatment, your skin will be sensitive, slightly red and possibly swollen. This reaction subsides within hours and your skin returns to normal. You may also experience a slight burning sensation of the skin, comparable with a sunburn. In most cases no special after care is necessary. If you wish, ice packs and/or a gentle soothing lotion, like Aloe Vera with vitamin K, may be applied to the area. On very rare occasions, blistering and/or scabbing has occurred in the literature, but not to one of our Laser Hair Removal Clients. If these reactions occur, the healing will take longer and will require more intensive after care provided by the client's primary care provider.

Avoid sun exposure and/or tanning for at least 1 month after treatment. Exposure to the sun may cause temporary skin changes and "browning". A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be applied.

What should I notice over the next few weeks?
Within 2 or 3 weeks after the treatment you will notice ‘regrowth’ or stubble. Some of this is dead hair being expelled by the skin, and some is 'actively growing hair' that will require additional treatments.

Are multiple treatments required?
The laser only treats hairs that are in their active growth phase. The number of active follicles and their cycle time will vary with each area of the body. Follicles that are in a dormant phase (at least one-third) may not significantly effected. Additional treatments are performed as hairs that were dormant become active and/or new hair grows. The number of sessions will vary with each patient and body area. It's important to realize that multiple treatments are  required. Usually 3 - 6 treatments 4 - 6 weeks apart above the shoulders and 6 - 8 weeks apart for areas below the shoulders are required to achieve satisfactory results.

Is laser hair removal permanent?
Unlike traditional methods such as shaving, plucking and waxing, laser hair removal is FDA Approved to provide long lasting permanent hair reduction.

How does laser hair removal work?
The laser targets the pigment within the hair follicle (melanin), disabling and killing the follicle. The laser is designed to selectively target the follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.

What areas are commonly treated?
For women, the lip and chin are the most common areas, followed by the bikini line, legs and underarms (axilla). For men the back, back of the neck, face, shoulders and upper arms are the most popular areas. It is possible to treat most areas of the body.

How is laser hair removal performed?
Laser hair removal is performed as an in-office procedure. This procedure is performed by our trained & certified on-staff technician. We personally evaluate each patient for hair color, texture, skin type and other factors prior to suggesting a laser hair removal program.

Are there risks associated with laser hair removal?
As with any procedure, there are risks. With laser hair removal they are minimal. At the time of your consultation, all potential risks including burn or blistering will be discussed with you prior to your laser hair removal treatment.

We have never had even one dissatisfied client, because we are thorough and attentive to you and not in a hurry. Again, we reiterate that the hair removal results are very remarkable! You too will be satisfied.

Are there any pre-treatment restrictions?
Suntan will make the laser treatment less effective and increase the chances for an adverse effect such as blisters or burning. Avoid sun bathing and tanning prior to the procedure. The follicle beneath the skin contains the melanin that the laser targets, so avoid waxing, plucking and electrolysis for several weeks prior to the procedure. Additionally, the laser can not be used in cases of active outbreaks of cold sores or Herpes Simplex virus or recent use of Retin-A and retinoic Acids.

Who is an ideal candidate for laser hair removal?
The ideal candidate has dark hair and light skin. Dark hairs absorb more of the laser light and lighter skin allows more transmission of the laser light into the follicle. However, all skin types and hair colors except white hair are effectively treated.
